Fort Wayne International Airport Announces Parking Lot Construction Project
Fort Wayne, Ind. –Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) is breaking ground on its parking lot rehabilitation construction project in April 2020. Due to COVID-19, there are less travelers thus giving us the opportunity for a parking lot construction project with little impact to passengers. The project includes milling and replacing the existing asphalt and improving the existing lot to welcome passengers back to an easily accessible airport terminal. This project will be a large part of Project Gateway, FWA’s terminal expansion project. Construction will begin on April 6th, 2020 and will be completed early summer.
There will be 30 minutes of free parking available for passengers in open parking lots during construction. All parking lots will be open and available at their normal rates during the long-term parking lot renovation. During the short-term parking lot renovation, that parking lot will be closed. An updated construction map will be located on the FWA website, and all social media platforms.
The parking lot rehabilitation project is one of many sub-projects that is included in Project Gateway. The other projects included with Project Gateway are the terminal apron expansion, solar canopies over the rental car lot, and the Airport’s terminal expansion project. The estimated total cost of the parking lot rehabilitation project is just over $487,000.
“We are currently living in interesting and challenging times. While we wish it would be business as normal, the fact is the suggested travel restrictions will actually help us complete this project in a more expeditious fashion. We work hard to maintain our facilities and this work is just another way of providing quality service to the airport users,” said Scott Hinderman, Executive Director of Airports. “This project will make parking easier for travelers. In addition to the rehabilitation of the parking lots, we are adding additional parking spaces in our long-term lot to accommodate anticipated passenger growth at the conclusion of this pandemic. This project will be the first phase of Project Gateway, which is our terminal area complex expansion project.”
