Airport access improvements underway at Fort Wayne International Airport
Fort Wayne, Ind. – Officials at the Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority are pleased to announce the receipt of two federal Airport Improvement Grants from the Federal Aviation Administration. The first is a $2.74 million grant aimed at enhancing access to the general aviation portion of Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA). The improvement includes a new access road to the west side of the airfield with services to the general aviation facilities as well as Endeavor Air’s aircraft maintenance facility. It also improves the access to the airport’s fuel farm. The second grant, in the amount of $118,000, is for the purchase of a new tractor at Smith Field Airport (SMD). The tractor will support mowing and snow removal operations.
“The receipt of these federal grants highlights the Airport Authority’s continued dedication to supporting both FWA and SMD. The new road at FWA will make it easier for users to access the airport’s general aviation facilities and, just as importantly, for those arriving users to access the region. The new tractor at SMD enhances safety and efficiency by placing newer, reliable equipment at Smith Field,” said Scott Hinderman, Executive Director of Airports.
Combined, the grants total more than $2.9-million. Construction on the West Access Road project will begin this month with anticipated completion in June 2014. Primco Inc. is the prime contractor on the project. The tractor is slated to be in operation at SMD in time for the snow season.
